🧔🏽‍♂️ Dad Thoughts: Role Player

Some parents think parenting means giving your kids everything they want, instead of teaching them to work for it. A friend told me about softball parents who were so upset about playing time that they started their own team.

Sports parenting is a hell of a drug.

With Niam, I try to do the opposite. At the park I'll ask him to let another kid go first, even if it was his turn. We work on passing and defense more than scoring. I want him to know the world doesn't revolve around him. That sometimes you're the supporter, not the star.

Honestly, I'm not sure if any of this matters. I just know I don't want him growing up thinking he's owed anything.

I want him to be resilient. To be okay with not getting his way. Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I'd rather raise a kid who knows how to handle a loss than one who buckles under it.
