🧔🏽‍♂️ Dad Thoughts: Peak Dad

Kiara went out last night. A long-overdue break, well earned. So it was me, Niam, and Nora (our four-month-old).

And somehow both kids decided to go easy on me. Feeds, diaper changes, bath, dinner, bedtime. No fighting it. Almost like they'd talked it over and agreed to be a small handful instead of a big one.

Eventually my daughter passed out on my chest and Niam was lying next to me, half asleep. And it hit me: this is probably peak dad. Think about it. When will my kids ever need me, or want to be next to me, as much as they do right now?

It felt great. And also bittersweet, because it doesn't last. They get older. They need you less. That's the whole point of the job.

It made me think of the Parable of the Mexican Fisherman. A Harvard banker tells a fisherman how to scale up: more boats, a cannery, an empire, an IPO. Twenty years of grinding. And the punchline, when the fisherman asks what he gets at the end of it all, is that he could finally retire to a small village to sleep late, fish a little, and play with his kids. Which is exactly the life he was already living.

We're all working for more. A better life for our kids and for ourselves. It's worth it. It's supposed to be hard and bumpy and exciting.

But every so often you look down and realize you already have what you're working for.
